Everyday items that can contribute to breast cancer!
A few household items and things around us that could potentially trigger breast cancer.
Just like the other parts of the human body, our breasts are also made up of millions of cells that have a controlled mechanism of cell renewal. Unfortunately, breast cancer causes this mechanism to spiral out of control and produce excessive cells that form a tumour. The tumour appears like an irregular lump in the breast which can be confirmed by a physical examination or, in some cases, through an x-ray.
Breast cancer accounts for 18% of cancer deaths in the world. Women, as well as men, can be victims of this type of cancer. Ageing, hereditary, personal history of cancer and excessive oestrogen are the four main causes of breast cancer. There are also quite a few triggers in our daily lives that could be making us vulnerable to this fatal disease – which we may be unaware of.
Here are some everyday things that can trigger breast cancer care:
Table of Contents
ToggleCandles:
We love candles for their accentuated soft glows and romantic feel. But the pristine blue-tinted wax is not as safe as you may assume. The fumes of the paraffin wax contain carcinogens, which can cause breast cancer. An occasional romantic candlelight dinner may not cause harm, but ensure that the room has enough ventilation when used indoors. Avoid using them in enclosed places like bathrooms and prayer rooms. If you are habituated to burning candles for relaxation purposes, it should be stopped.
Granite:
Yes, you read that right. This prestigious easy to clean stone has a dark secret. Granite is known to emit – a radioactive gas that increases the risk of cancer. The high-density gas is colourless and odourless, making it impossible to detect, but it is highly lethal.
Vinyl:
This is a common household item, which contains a chemical called phthalates. This chemical is found to be an active breast cancer agent.
Cosmetics:
Time and again, we have been instructed to wash off makeup in order to get rid of it from our bodies. But the chemicals in sunscreen can be found in urine even three days after use. This shows that not only are these chemicals getting absorbed but they are also being stored in the body. Cosmetics contain carcinogens as well, and the fragrance used in them is also a source of concern as their formulae are not shared openly by the manufacturers.
Hair dyes:
The use of hair dyes is also linked to cancer. Contaminated mascara contains a carcinogen called cadmium, which triggers the growth of protein in the body and increases breast cancer cells with it. Birth control pills: Female bodies are hard-wired for pregnancies and breastfeeding. Having multiple pregnancies and subsequent breastfeeding before the age of thirty significantly reduce the risks of breast cancer in women. The reverse happens with the use of birth pills. They have been implicated in an increased risk of breast cancer.
Toothpaste:
There has been a studied silence on the safety of the ingredients used in toothpaste. Triclosan is an antibiotic substance necessary for dental hygiene, but it is said to be a breast cancer trigger as well.
Canned foods:
The convenience of canned food is undisputed. However, they are not a safe option as compared to fresh or frozen foods. The plastic lining with Bisphenol A in canned foods causes hormonal imbalances and DNA changes that can lead to breast cancer.
Air pollution:
Diesel and petrol release carbon monoxide and benzene through car fumes. Benzene is a carcinogen. Women exposed to high levels of pollution are at an increased risk of breast cancer.
Air fresheners:
Just like vinyl, air fresheners contain phthalates that can trigger the growth of breast cancer cells. In addition, they have chemicals like acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde, which when combined with petroleum-based solvents and fragrances are a potent concoction for breast cancer.
Alcoholic beverages:
You might want to think twice before consuming one too many alcoholic beverages. The ethanol present in alcohol gets converted to acetaldehyde which causes DNA damage and increases in oestrogen levels that cause breast cancer.
We seem to be coming around a full circle. Were the generations before us better off using natural products on their body, away from the pollution, living in natural surroundings and eating healthier food? Have we progressed in the real sense?
