Embracing the Power of Support Groups: A Journey of Healing and Strength
“I can never forget that moment. It was on a chilly Monday morning when the doctor broke the news about my thyroid cancer to me” says Tanzeem Suhail a 30-year-old entrepreneur from Colombo, Sri Lanka. “For a couple of minutes, I was lost and didn’t know how to react. Whatever the doctor said after that was hazy as the only word that kept ringing in my mind was ‘cancer’!”
“For 2 weeks to be precise, I was in depression. I stopped talking to my friends and family. I stopped going to my shop and there was this strange urge to binge eat as if these were my last meals. I live alone and on one of the days when it was raining heavily, I had to step out to buy some supplies as the online guys wouldn’t deliver.
It was there that I met Miriam who now is my closest friend. Miriam was stuck in the superstore with me due to the rains and we got talking. I had noticed that she had vitiligo and she caught me staring at her. Oh don’t feel bad for me, I have made peace with it, she said. And as if that was my cue, I blurted out that I had cancer and I couldn’t deal with it.
I attended my first support group meeting with Miriam a week later and when I saw how different people coped with their illnesses which were more severe than mine, I was in awe. I don’t know what happened but I suddenly I felt that my condition was conquerable and I had the strength to fight it. Although now my cancer is in remission I still am a regular at the meetings.”

ToggleDo support groups really help?
We spoke to Azra Mohsin who is a counselor and who moderates the support group that Tanzeem visits.
She said that the road to recovery need not be traveled alone. These are times when the love and support of loved ones matters the most for coping. But sometimes talking to a stranger is easier for fear of being judged. Support groups that include unknown people from different walks of life, work as a balm. They provide an extraordinary tapestry of compassion, understanding, and resilience fostering a sense of belonging and transformative catalysts for countless individuals. Within these circles of understanding, individuals find the courage to share their stories, gain wisdom from others, break free from isolation, and rediscover their resilience.
Azra lists the following benefits of attending a support group during an illness
A Safe Haven of Understanding:
At the core of support groups lies the unique bond formed by shared experiences. These groups provide a safe haven where individuals can openly express their thoughts, emotions, and fears without judgment. In the embrace of kindred spirits who have walked similar paths, one finds solace in the knowledge that they are not alone in their struggles. It is within these circles of empathy that true healing begins.
Strength through Shared Wisdom:
Support groups offer a wellspring of collective wisdom, where each participant contributes their unique insights and experiences. The diversity of perspectives creates a rich tapestry of knowledge that can be invaluable on the path to recovery. In these groups, one can gain practical advice, coping strategies, and newfound perspectives that inspire personal growth. The stories of resilience and triumph shared within these groups ignite a spark of hope, reminding individuals that they too can overcome their challenges.
Breaking the Chains of Isolation:
Isolation can be one of the most debilitating aspects of personal struggles. The power of support groups lies in their ability to shatter the chains of isolation, replacing them with a vibrant sense of community. Engaging with others who have faced similar adversities instills a renewed sense of belonging, fostering connections that transcend the boundaries of a shared struggle. Together, individuals forge deep connections, creating a network of support that becomes an anchor during challenging times.
Empowering Self-Discovery:
Within the nurturing environment of support groups, individuals have the opportunity to embark on a journey of self-discovery. The process of sharing and active listening allows participants to reflect upon their experiences, feelings, and aspirations. As they witness the growth and resilience of others, they gain a deeper understanding of their own potential for healing and transformation. Support groups become fertile ground for self-reflection, self-acceptance, and the development of new perspectives.
Fostering Resilience and Hope:
In the face of adversity, support groups serve as beacons of resilience and hope. Participants inspire one another to persevere through their own challenges by sharing stories of progress and triumph. Witnessing the transformative power of others creates a sense of possibility, igniting a flame of hope even in the darkest of moments. Through the collective strength of the group, individuals find the courage to face their fears, overcome obstacles, and build a brighter future.
