How Weight Loss can Save Your Life
If you just thought that weight loss can make you look and feel good above anything else, think again. It can reduce the risk of various health conditions and save your life.
Why is it important to lose weight? If we were to ask this question to ourselves, our first impulsive answer would be to look and feel good.
“That’s what most of my clients want out of a weight loss program,” says Mubaraka Palanpurwala, a senior dietitian with Apollo 24/7.
“Sooner or later they do admit that they want to look younger, fit in all those cool clothes and look great in all the photos,” she adds.
But while Palanpurwala agrees that looking good is one of the most encouraging factors of weight reduction, she urges on the health benefits, a weight loss regime can bring and how it can transform the lives of people.
“Weight loss can reduce the risk of multiple ailments and help you live a longer and healthier life,” she points out and asks people how will they look and feel good if their body is not healthy and doesn’t support them.
The most recent example is of Fat Joe, the American rapper who lost 200 pounds and says how losing weight saved his life.
Fat Joe in an interview with the health magazine, ‘Hip Hop Health’ says this transformation was triggered by the loss of loved ones who had died due to ailments caused by weight issues and pushed him into a spell of depression.
The singer further stated that he constantly told himself to ‘push forward’ as he could not just ‘sit there and dwell’ and altered his behavior and lifestyle to overcome depression as he didn’t want to see his loved ones suffer.
Fat Joe is now on a health adventure that began when he discovered the science behind healthy habits and says the new him makes him and his family very happy.
Dr Mohan Gokhale a Mumbai-based physician says that in today’s fast-paced world, where convenience and sedentary lifestyles prevail, maintaining a healthy weight has become increasingly challenging for many individuals. However, the importance of weight reduction for better health cannot be overstated, and lists the health benefits weight reduction brings.

ToggleHere are 5 health benefits of weight reduction
1. Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases:
Weight reduction is a proven strategy to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Excessive weight strains the cardiovascular system, leading to high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, and an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. By shedding extra pounds, individuals can significantly improve their cardiovascular health and decrease the likelihood of these life-threatening conditions.
2. Enhanced Mental Health:
Physical health and mental well-being are intricately linked. Numerous studies have highlighted the positive impact of weight reduction on mental health. Losing weight can boost self-esteem, improve body image, and increase self-confidence. It also releases endorphins and other mood-enhancing chemicals, leading to reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. The improved mental well-being resulting from weight reduction can foster a positive outlook on life and enhance overall happiness.
3. Increased Energy Levels:
Carrying excess weight places additional stress on the body, leading to fatigue and reduced energy levels. Weight reduction can alleviate this burden, resulting in increased vitality and improved stamina. Shedding pounds through a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise boosts metabolism, enhances oxygen flow, and improves the efficiency of bodily systems. With increased energy levels, individuals can engage in daily activities with tremendous enthusiasm and enjoy an overall higher quality of life
4. Joint Health and Mobility:
Excessive weight puts significant strain on joints, particularly the knees and hips. This can lead to joint pain, inflammation, and an increased risk of conditions such as osteoarthritis. By reducing weight, individuals can alleviate pressure on the joints, resulting in improved mobility and a reduced risk of joint-related issues. Regular exercise, combined with weight reduction, strengthens muscles, promotes flexibility, and ensures better joint health in the long run.
5. Quality Sleep:
Weight reduction can have a profound impact on sleep quality. Excess weight contributes to sleep apnea and other breathing-related sleep disorders. Losing weight can alleviate these issues, resulting in improved breathing during sleep and better overall sleep quality. Restful sleep is vital for physical and mental well-being, and weight reduction plays a crucial role in achieving a good night’s sleep.
To conclude Dr Gokhale says that the importance of weight reduction for better health cannot be emphasized enough. Beyond the aesthetic benefits, shedding excess pounds leads to a multitude of positive outcomes, including reduced risk of chronic diseases, enhanced mental health, increased energy levels, improved joint health, and better sleep quality.
“Embracing a balanced lifestyle that incorporates healthy eating habits and regular physical activity is key to achieving weight reduction goals. By prioritizing weight reduction and making sustainable changes, individuals can transform their health and enjoy a happier, more fulfilling life,” says Palanpurwala.
“But do it for yourself and your health and not for others,” she adds.
