5 Promises To Make During An Illness
Don’t let an illness whether acute or chronic, bog you down. Use the five ways listed below and show the condition who’s the boss.
Life can throw unexpected curveballs your way in the guise of an illness. It may be a temporary condition or a chronic ailment that requires a significant alteration in the lifestyle.
Chronic and severe ailments require long-term adjustments and they require you to have a strong sense of conviction to keep going. There may be times when you falter and want to give up and that is human. However, if you make yourself these five promises, the journey can get a little easier and simpler.
Five promises that you make to yourself to deal with an ailment effectively
Accept your condition and the new normal: When the doctor breaks the news of the illness you need to take a pause, understand the new situation, and be prepared for the changes it may involve. You need to accept your new condition in the mind before you translate it into your physical reality.
Get yourself treated: This one may sound obvious but some people go into denial and assume that avoiding treatment may save money and other hassles. They think that with a few lifestyle changes and other alternative therapies, the condition can be treated. We aren’t against lifestyle changes and alternative therapies. If they work it is excellent but if you need the initial treatment to control the condition then it is imperative to go for it. The illness can be managed later with other therapies effectively.
Recover completely: This one is the most common. After the initial treatment and within a few doses if you start feeling better you may be in a haste to believe that you are fine and want to jump back to your normal routine. This may cause a problem. Complete recovery from an illness or a condition is vital so that there is no relapse and you have to repeat the treatment. The West has a very helpful concept of sending patients to a continuum care facility after hospitalization to help them stabilize and recover so that when they go home they can manage their situation without any complications. Even if there is no hospitalization involved, the facility helps people cope better with their situation to manage it efficiently. Continuum care is now available in India as a part of an ever-evolving healthcare landscape to help people regain their quality of life.
Love yourself: It is natural for you to blame yourself for the condition you have developed and the physical and mental changes it brings may not be easy for you to accept. These are trying times when you have to keep telling yourself that it isn’t your fault and you are going to bounce back from the setback with positivity. One effective way is to never stop loving yourself. This helps you find new ways to treat yourself better and reclaim your life.
Help other people: During challenging times, contrary to the belief, you are never alone. Many are going through similar trauma. Suppose you have fought and defeated your health condition. In that case, your experience and journey may be an inspiration to many others who are still in the process of fighting and may benefit tremendously from your story. A good way is to form a community or join an existing one where everyone can come together and share their experiences and provide support to one another.
A serious illness may make life seem very small and insignificant, but facing the problem head-on with a correct approach can reduce the complications and step-by-step help you get there where the illness is conquered and cornered. Life may not be only about breathing and existing but it is also about accepting, fighting, and conquering.
These are five ways we think that can help you. Still, if you have any other suggestions or any inspirational experience or method to share that worked for you, we would love to hear from you. We may feature your story in our next newsletter edition to let our readers learn and benefit.
